From Bob, Child's Age 14,15 - 4/14/102 - IP#: 67.226.64.120 Click here to reply Here is an interesting argument against using diapers in kids who wet the bed: Statistically speaking, when bedwetters become dry, only about half of them become dry by learning to sleep through the night without wetting. The other half become dry by learning to wake up in the night and use the toilet. Here's the point: If half of bedwetters become dry by learning to wake up and use the toilet, that means that half of kids using diapers may never become dry because they have little motivation to learn to wake up and use the toilet. In fact, last month's poll on this site shows that 61% of those voting would rather pee in a diaper and sleep than wake up and use the toilet in the night. Joan, I would appreciate your comments, as well as those from others.

I would like to contribute to this board as I feel that I have a lot in common with other parents here, however I am somewhat reticent as I am not sure all the contributors are really genuine. For example Terri, childs age 10 and Lana, childs age 11 both have the same IP# and appear to have the same style of writing leading me to believe they are one and the same person.
Is this board moderated and would anyone care to comment?

I have a 11 yar old son who sho still wets the bed almost every night so I know that "management" of the problem is an important issue. He has a younger brother who just now dried up at age 9. However, we do need to also think and discuss about how to treat or stop the problem not just have discussion about to diaper or not and waiting until the child grows out of it. You see I am one of those 3% of bedwetters who never outgrow it. Yes, I am a 31 year old bedwetter. I wet 5-6 nights /week. About the same frequency as my 11 year old. In the days when I grew up the management choice was the rubber sheet "method", with holding liquids and morning laundry chores. But I didnt' have any real treatment efforts or programs to stop/cure the bedwetting. Just management of the problem. After all I was going to outgrow it. Oh I have been to plenty of Dr.s since I was a child for this problem. DDAVP, tofranil the works. Since nothing has worked for the long term now I am stuck wearing diapers if I want to sleep with my wife. Being a bedwetter at my age is embarassing. Wearing diapers is embarassing. Going to college as a bedwetter was embarassing. I can see how my 11 year old is embarassed. Now that even his younger brother is dry at night I know he really worries that maybe he will be like dad and not outgrow this. Because I didnt' get any treatment as a youth to stop this problem and because I worry about my 11 year old I have signed both of us up for a treatment program. I don't know if it will work but we are both gonna go through it together. It's that or night diapers maybe forever and I want to get out of them. It's gonna be alot of work. Counseling calls every couple weeks, bladder exercises. Measuring urine volume. wetting alarms. The works. This treatment program will also be difficult on my wife an even my 9 year old might have to help out. I know many of you just say wait and he/she will grow out of it. But I dont' think you have any idea what it's like to be like me an adult who now has to wear diaeprs, who now has to wear a bedwetting buzzer and talk to a counselor every couple of weeks along with my 11 year old. So I guess my final word is get a handle on it when kids are young if possible. I know I am the exception and almost all do outgrow it but you never know who that 1-3% might be.

From Cindy , Child's Age 10 - 3/28/2002 - IP#: 205.188.196.47 Click here to reply Hi, I am the mother of a 10 year bedwetter. I now have her in disposable diapers for day and night wetting. I want to know if there are any disposable diapers that still have the plastic outside cover. I know that she doesn't think about having to go to the bathroom and she will just go in the diaper. I believe that if she had a diaper with a plastic cover she would remember to go to the toilet for two reasons, if not more that I haven't thought about. The first reason is that when the diaper bunches up between her legs the diaper tends to make her legs hot and sweaty, which may remind her to go. The second reason is because the diaper will make noise against her pants and she will be embarassed enough to go to the bathroom. Don't get me wrong I don't believe that embarassment is going to solve the problem, but I think it may help to steer her towards going to the bathroom, especially during the day. Please respond on the board and NOT through e-mails because I don't have an e-mail address, I only have the internet. Thanks, Cindy

From Shelley, Child's Age 12 - 3/25/2002 - IP#: 65.212.41.70 Click here to reply Hello all. I have a 12 year old daughter that has been a night time bed-wetter all of her life. Have been to several docs and all say that more than likely she will outgrow this before puberty. There were no signs of any other problems. I am getting so discouraged, thinking that this will never go away. She refuses to wear "night gear", instead we just use a plastic liner on her bed... and she is responsible for doing "her" laundry.(A suggestion from the Doc) We have tried everything!!! And now we are just hanging on to the hope that she WILL outgrow this. We don't make a big deal out of it, believing that if we do it will only lower her self asteem more. I guess I am looking for any suggestions and/or support that can be offered. Thanks!

He has also had a bunch of day time accidents to. I dont know what i should do with him. Should I put him back into daipers or not. I dont want to make him feel like a baby but he i think would like to be in daipers because he doesnt like waking up wet or everybody at his school laughing at him because he wet himself. Lately he has been pooping in his pants too. He tells me he doesnt know when its gonna happen. If you have any suggestions u can e-mial on my husbands e-mail address which is bigdb@mac.com. Thank you for your help.
