... We tried the alarm. It is I, who would wake up and help him clean up. The alarm would go off 2 sometimes 3 times a night. He was getting up grumpy in the morning, so I went back to a diaper so he could sleep. I got Matt into a routine. When he got up, he put his wet diaper by the washer in a pail. I started him early on taking a shower each morning before school. It was very important for me to make sure his room did not smell of pee, and that there was not sign of diapers or bedwetting in his room for when his friends would come over. I would do the laundry once a week. Matt was a heavy wetter, so disposables and Goodnites leaked quite a bit. I would use cloth pullups, so he could do it himself, and plastic pants. He would frequently wet more than once a night. By the time he was 14, he was dry once in a while. And his diaper was not as wet in the morning. Both he and myself were getting encouraged, and saw better days ahead. He was down to 3 wet nights a week.Matt’s daytime control was very good. He was sensitive to this and tired very hard. He did NOT want his friends to know about the bed wetting, and certainly did not want his friends to see him in wet pants.Matt had good control in the day. I know he was sometimes worried about peeing his pants, but was almost always able to hold on. His underwear would be slightly damp sometimes. But the rare occasional accident did happen. At school, it happened twice in the 2nd grade, and once in 5th grade. Nothing major after that until I took Matt and 2 of his friends to a hockey game when he was 14. They were all pretty excited and having fun. I blame what happened partially on myself. I should have reminded him to use the bathroom before we left the stadium. He wet his pants in the car on the way home, and his 2 friends were aware of his predicament. His 2 friends were really nice about it. But Matt was really hard on himself. He cried himself to sleep that night and it broke my heart.I noticed a few things at this point. Matt used the bathroom A LOT more often. And before this incident, he was having some dry nights, and his diaper was not as wet. Now it seemed we were at square 1. He was back to wetting every night, and his diaper was wetter and heavier ever. Being a teenager, he was really embarrassed, but I did make him sit down and talk with me about it. He wanted more than anything to throw away the diapers. I asked him to hold on to his pee in the day for as long as he could. He was resistant to this at first, as he was afraid of wetting himself in the day. I convinced him to do this, and he agreed to wear some goodnites under his underpants in the day, "just in case". I had him drink as much as he could, and stop and start the flow when he did pee. I left him to his privacy, but was aware of some damp underwear. But with my encouragement he did stick to the program. It seems counter to thought, but I had him drink as much as he wanted before going to bed. Something I did not do before. I made sure he went to the bathroom before he went to bed. His wet nights became less, and the morning diaper, although sometimes wet, was drier than before. After a 3-week stint of only dry nights, we did away with the diaper. I leave the plastic sheep and pad on the bed, but after 3 months of dry I told him I was throwing out the diapers. You have never seen such a happy kid. I showed Matt how to use the washer. Made a deal with him that if his sheets, for whatever reason, needed washing, he needed to do it himself. At 16 he is completely dry. And he rarely uses the washer.I was worried that my son was going to go to college in diapers. This is a success story that I hope is able to help out some other parents and kids.
