Reply from Tom, Child's Age none - 7/11/02 - IP#: 159.39.16.14If bedwetting runs in your family your son is more likely to be a bedwetter also. The rule of thumb says he will probably outgrow it about the same age you did if left untreated. There is no reason for sleeping on the floor when the bed is soaking wet, there are pull-ups, diapers, Goodnites, etc, that will keep the bed dry and keep him comfortable. Also, don’t restrict fluids too much (yourself included), that can cause dehydration and concentrated urine, which increases the chances of rashes and infections. Five may be a bit young to get really worked up about getting him dry. If it really bothers him and he gets upset about wetting, then you should try to help him, but if it doesn’t bother him yet you might wait a while. Eventually he will realize that other kids his age don’t wet and he will want help then. For more information, particularly about using alarms, look at www.drgreene.org - there is a link there to bedwetting that has some good information. Contrary to what Pacific International says, Dr. Greene seems to recommend trying any kind of treatment for a few weeks and discontinue it if no results are seen in that time. There are also alarms on the market for under $100 if you want to try one. |
