Bob1 – I think you underestimate the embarrassment that kids (especially teenagers) feel about being nappied/diapered. Even Tom (with his Asperger’s) is becoming increasingly embarrassed with his nappies when out walking or visiting relatives, but he does recognise that he needs them, as he would be even more embarrassed with wet pants while out walking. I think that this embarrassment provides a very strong incentive to become dry. I am sure that it is this factor, which is resulting in the very recent progress we have noticed, when we have been out walking. A couple of times in the last few days, Tom has announced that he needed a toilet when we have been about twenty or thirty minutes away from home, and still had a dry nappy when we got back home. When we are in Scotland at Easter, we will be going out for some walks in the Highlands, so I am intending to leave off his nappies to see if we can achieve further progress. The risk will actually be quite low as he will be able to relieve himself out in the wilds without needing to find a toilet. If this is successful, we can then progress to the incentive of getting rid of his nappies altogether if he becomes dry at night. I am sure that if we made him sleep in a cold wet bed, he would regard it as a punishment, not an incentive. By the way, from what I have read, Asperger’s is almost certainly not the cause Tom’s wetting, but it may well affect his perception of his wetting.
