Reply from john, Child's Age 17 - 3/10/02 - IP#: 203.155.9.152Joan and Maggie, I have been following your exchange on this board and it seems to me you are not alone in wanting to put your boys in diapers for long trips and days out, when they will probably wear their diaper/nappy all day and continue wetting in it all day until they get home. I suspect for some parents it is a matter of convenience to them, as much as it is of necessity for their children, though I do not want to be critical here...I am merely thinking of our own experience. However, one of you also mentioned diapering your child to go for a walk. It seems to me that when you put a child in protection for short journeys from home you are inviting trouble. From there, it is probably but a short step before your children wear protection most of the day. Think about this: your son wakes up diapered; you let him have his breakfast diapered; he might start playing outside, still fully diapered; then it's lunchtime, and it might just be easier to change his diaper rather than insist he have a wash, get dressed and so on. I would like to say again that I do not want to be critical; in fact, I think your exchange is one of the most matter-of-fact and informative I've read. However, as a parent I worry we could have done some things better while Michael was younger, and while we still had some chance of influencing his behaviour. I think the way we handled Michael's wetting problems was wrong. We now have a serious problem on our hands and I have no idea how to go about fixing it. John |
