Jeffrey--I believe you have set up a false dichotomy on the issue of motivation to stop bedwetting, namely that bedwetting is either “deliberate” (in which case it is said not to be bedwetting at all) or there is absolutely nothing a bedwetter can do to stop. This is a dichotomy often propounded by “life-long bedwetters” who see it at work in their own cases and assume it is true of all children who wet the bed. The fact is, there are a great many former bedwetters, parents and professionals who would claim that motivation is an important part of the process in learning to stay dry. Not only this site (see the story “Dean and the Wiz” as well as the accounts on the research board) but on sites all over the internet, in books and articles, and in personal accounts, wanting to stop bedwetting and working at it are regarded as essential. Unfortunately, there is also a growing trend that says all bedwetters should be left alone, the problem should be contained but not solved, and that bedwetting is just another life-style (albeit one we don’t chose for ourselves).
