You need to make him understand that diapers are equipment used only to solve the problem of a wet bed and get a good nights sleep. Get him out of them as soon as he wakes up--best you wake him. Diapers can make the kid lazy and prolong the problem. Example: waking in the middle of the night having to "go" and instead of getting up, wetting and going back to sleep. Or, waking in the morning to a dry diaper and wetting anyway because it is easier. Sometimes the pull up type diaper is best (with doubler pad) because they are more like underwear and he can still "go". The taped or pinned diaper makes that more difficult and can lead to be lazy. Diapers can make the parent lazy too. make sure that he follows the rules: fluid intake before bed, medicine (if used), make sure that if he wakes up and has to go that he does or holds it and gets you up to help. I still think that protection is better than a wet bed for both the kid as well as the parents, but you must be careful in the way you use them because you can prolong the use of them by becoming lazy or attached. I come from a family of bedwetters and have always followed this approach with the "night gear". |
